Jazzed About Writing

July 14, 2008

I am addicted to words. Here are the top 11 reasons I get jazzed about writing:

  1. I get to make up comical stories about people in quirky situations and conversations that make me laugh. When I think of them, I get an endorphin buzz. Yes, I crack myself up.
  2. I get to solve puzzles (love a good brain stretch). Nothing so deep as the meaning of life, but being a word nerd, how I fit words together and the feelings and visions they evoke give me a real kick, one that carries me through to the next writing session. Yee-haw!
  3. I get to say things through my characters to people about their wrongdoings that I wish I had the presence and quickness of mind – and wit! — to say in real life at the very moment the wrongdoing occurs. Take that!
  4. I get to immerse myself in new worlds, adventures and misadventures, and form tight bonds of friendships — um, and fantasize about sex. I’m never lonely!
  5. I get to leave my desk after a productive and lengthy bout of writing, especially when I’ve been ”in flow,” with a huge sense of accomplishment. I rule.
  6. I get the chance to work out life’s little complexities. Through the analytical and creative combo process I uncover just the right words with the right nuances that give me those revealing “ah-has!” And feel like a real smarty pants.
  7. I get to figure out what motivates characters (and real life people) to behave in ways many others wouldn’t understand, and then get those “others” to understand by doling out bits of personality, history, and (gasp!) deep, dark secrets. Bwa-ah-ah!
  8. I get to play with the element of surprise. I can fool people into thinking the story or character is going one direction and then intrigue them when it goes in an unexpected direction (all for good reasons, natch). Hey, what’s around this corner . . . BOO!
  9. I get to imagine and experience every range of emotion, from joy to sorrow, excitement to dread, titillation to pain. Now that’s a scary and exhilarating roller coaster ride!
  10. I get to relive new romance, first dates, first kisses, and first … well, other firsts. Note, I do kiss and tell!
  11. I get to be in charge of everything! From a character’s appearance to his actions. I am the unequivocal queen of the universe!

I am a Doc who likes to write fiction. To protect the privacy of my patients, I change all names and enough clinical detail to make the story unrecognizable, but all of the emotions and human dynamics are true.

As one lit professor said, “For it to be good fiction, it need not necessarily have happened but it must be true.”

LIke you, I am jazzed by words, and find to write them is the only way I can download my brain activity for others to consider. I also play music, and it comes close, but writing remains the supreme art form for me.

I am about half way through my first novel, and my agent thinks it has a chance. Come visit me on my blog. I like your style, and I am open to any and all constructive criticism in my journey.

Like you, I can never get enough with words. I nod at your top 11 especially the last one :D though I do get frustrated when my character decides to challenge me suddenly. Bummer. I will visit here again. Your writings are calling out to me saying, “Hey! Come on over, I dare you to if you so much has a love for words”.

Thank you! Please come back anytime. I indulge my word addiction on a regular basis, and it’s nice to be among fellow “wordies.”

    Best,
    Kimber

    12. I get to write the stories I want to read. :)

There are a lot of great books out there, but few authors create characters I love as much as I do, hah!
