Six Magic Words
July 27, 2008
Okay, so I’ve been hearing about this Six-Word memoir thing-a-ma-jig, so I checked it out. Have you heard of it? I dare you to try it yourself. Never one to shrink from a challenge, I came up with six magic words of my own:
Slow to bud, but awesome blossom.
Then I thought, well that sort of encompasses my life, but not really. So I gave it another try:
Third time’s not a charm. Damn.
Says a lot about me — and quite accurately — but really doesn’t get me all the way there. So then I put my writer’s muse to work, and she came up with:
Shhh, not now. Mama’s writing smut.
Seemed to encompass the writing life fairly well, but there’s a whole other side of me that just wasn’t tapped. I thought, well what about:
Rebel mama, different drummer, humor me.
Okay, cryptic, but anyone who knows me will understand it and agree. More to the point is this one:
Still waiting for the big adventure.
Yeah, yeah. Who isn’t, right? There’s more to life than adventure – isn’t there? Please say yes. And what about love? Your one true, forever love? It’s what I’ve always dreamed of, two rocking chairs side by side, all the younguns doing the cooking and cleaning. Ah, sweet romance. How about:
Endless love calls, hear me now?
C’est magnifique! But once again, no cigar. I realized I had accumulated many six-word memoirs, which meant I had blown the exercise! I hadn’t narrowed my life down to six words and only six words! I was six times six and counting! And still the challenge stared me in the face. Being the daughter of the master improvisor, Mr. Bill, I decided to take one word from each memoir, and that should encompass my whole, freakin’ life! Right? Let’s see if this fits:
Awesome charm, smut humor, adventure calls.
Heh, heh. I’m really digging that awesome charm part — and of course it’s true. Smut humor, that’s my irreverence gene making sure the world hears me loud and clear, and then there’s my as-yet-unrequited dream of seeing the world. Yup, I’ve done it! I have fit myself into six simple words.
I’m feeling a little squished.

I really enjoyed reading this! I think my favorite one is
“Rebel mama, different drummer, humor me.” I also liked your “dare to suck” post.

I’ll have to try one for myself. Hmmmm
If I do, I’ll post it and then link back to this post of yours as my source of inspiration.

Someone asked me to do that six word thing and I couldn’t. Doesn’t say much about me as a writer, does it? I’m wordy!!

Hey, April! Thanks for stopping by.
Apparently, I’m wordy too. Hard to narrow it down to just six words. I’m so much more than my bio!

I so loved this six word memoir thing. An exercise in self-definition. It is funny how the second you self-define — you have to try to squirm away and into another condensed version! I’d have the same inclination. Human nature? Writers’ natures? I’m going to do this on my site later on today or tomorrow, and link to you.
Great post.

Thanks, Leigh. It was a fun exercise, and much harder than you might think.
I will look for your six-word memoir.

Gawd, that was funny. Mama hasn’t written smut here in a while – to stuck on the post apocalypse – but my husband thinks he could be a kept man in no time if I would just turn to erotica.

Hey, erotica is a booming business!
